OLOG eNewsletter Term 2 Week 2
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Welcome to Term 2 and I extend a very warm welcome to the new families who join our OLOG family this term. I hope that you all enjoyed the break from the rigour of school routine and demands. We were blessed with quite warm weather, and it was lovely to hear students share the opportunities for outdoor activities and holidays during this time.
Last week we gathered for our ANZAC liturgy. Whilst ANZAC Day fell during the school break our liturgy was a time to remember not only those who took part at Gallipoli, but all Australian Servicemen and women who have fought for this country. Our Year 1 students made a wreath whilst our Reception students made their poppies and proudly wore these to the liturgy.
Pop-up Playgroup
During Week 1 we planned and provided a successful Pop-Up Playgroup held in our community space led by Ms Summers and Miss Morgan. What a huge success to witness over 20 families come along and participate in the many varied sensory activities. We will continue to explore further or more regular Playgroup sessions at OLOG.
Setting our Academic Expectations for Term 2
As we hit the second week of Term 2, classes are in full swing with our students seeking to build on the success of Term 1. We are also committed to continue to develop our emphasis on building a strong learning culture where everyone strives to achieve their personal best.
As a community of learners, we wish to continue to look at ways to improve our academic standards and outcomes. OLOG has produced many successful learning and academic achievements, but the sense that we can take this to the next level is very real.
While our teachers do a remarkable job in staying abreast of latest educational trends and implementing them into their daily practice, your assistance is also vital. You can never underestimate the impact of parents in developing a learning culture.
The following pointers provide some useful tips for parents in assisting their child to reach their educational potential:
How Should I Help My Child with Homework?
Show that you think education and homework are important. If your child knows that you care about what is happening at school, he or she will have a good reason to complete and engage in learning.
- Set a regular time for homework. The best schedule for homework is what works best for your child and your family. Your child’s outside activities, such as sports or music lessons may mean that you need a flexible homework time to be set aside.
- Provide an area for your child to do homework. Make sure the area is well-lit and has minimal distractions.
- Ensure that there are no distractions. Turn off the television if it is keeping your child from doing his or her homework or practise of reading or learning words.
- Provide supplies and identify resources. Have pencils, pens, erasers, writing paper, a dictionary, or other supplies that may be helpful available.
- Help your child use everyday routines to support the skills he or she is learning. Teach your child to play word and math games. Help your child look up information about something in which he or she is interested.
- Look over completed assignments/learning before they are turned in. Then, after the teacher returns completed homework, read the comments/feedback to see if your child has done the work satisfactorily or areas for further improvement.
- Talk about school and learning activities in family conversations. Ask your child what was one thing that they learnt in class that day.
- Show your child that the skills he or she is learning are an important part of the things adults do. Let your child see you reading, writing, or using math. Talk to your child about what you do at work.
- Attend school activities. Please check the Term 2 Calendar. If you can, volunteer to help in your child’s classroom or at special events.
- Please visit your child’s classroom and speak regularly with your child’s teacher about their learning and successes.

Catholic Education Week
The theme for 2023 is Raising Hearts and Minds with God for social justice.
Three questions that we may ask ourselves with this theme in mind are;
- How do we Raise our Hearts and Minds to the needs of others?
- How can we Raise our Hearts and Minds to the needs in our community?
- How can we Raise our Hearts and Minds to the needs in the world?
The following quote from Mary Mackillop is very fitting; “Never see a need without doing something about it.”
The children will participate in various activities throughout next week to celebrate Catholic Education Week.
We invite parents to encourage their children to embrace the practice of saying grace in your homes before meals.
Below are two different compositions that you could use.
Grace #1
Loving God, We ask you to bless this food which comes to us through the work of many people, from the sowing of seeds in the earth to our table here today. We pray for those in our world who do not have enough food. Help us to always care for people and your beautiful creation.
Amen.
Grace #2
Loving God, Thankyou for the food we are about to eat. Thank you for the people who made it. We pray for all those who do not have enough to eat and we help us to ensure that all people are treated with love, compassion and respect.
Amen

Yaer 6 Leadership Day
On Monday 8th May. eight Year 6 students attended Fitness Leadership Day run by the South Australian Catholic Primary Schools Sports Association (SACPSSA). The purpose of the day was to develop students’ leadership qualities and how to develop fitness games. The students were actively engaged in games, collaborating in problem solving activities in group settings with students from other schools. As well as learning about games and how to lead them, students discussed what qualities makes a good leader. The day was very productive and valuable in the development of our students’ lifelong learning.
South West SAPSASA Cross Country Carnival
On Tuesday OLOG had a team of runners represent the school at the South West SAPSASA Cross Country Carnival. Students ran either 2 or 3km around the course at West Beach with a top 5 finish securing a spot in the South West team to compete at Oakbank later in the year. Well done to all who competed.
A big congratulation to Year 6 students, Bryce and Liam, for being selected as part of the South West District Football Team. We wish them all the best moving forward.
On Wednesday 10 May, Year 6LL visited the Charles Young Nursing home located in Morphettville. Our Year 6's enjoyed the relationship they developed with the mature citizens in our community and benefit from the wealth of knowledge that they share. Through these visits we highlight the Dominican Pillars of Community and Service.
The morning started off with a meet and greet where students shared handmade cards filled with poems, jokes, and inspirational quotes. These were a great hit with the residents. They then read some of their favourite picture books with the residents and joined in with their daily exercise to the tunes of ABBA!
Everyone had an amazing time and we can’t wait to go back and visit the residents again.

The Mini Vinnies will be supporting World wellbeing Week by making stress balls to sell.
To help make this project possible we are asking for any unused (open or not open) bags of rice, flour, lentils, corn starch, legumes or split peas. Left over balloons are also welcomed.
All funds raised will go to Saint Vincent DePaul, providing support to people in need.
The year 2 science class are developing their skills in collecting data through investigation techniques. Using different materials to bend, stretch, twist, tear or cut they recorded their findings.
