At Our Lady of Grace educators run MultiLit programs which are effective literacy instruction grounded in scientific evidence-based practice.
InitiaLit is an whole-class literacy program providing all children with the essential core knowledge and strong foundations to become successful readers and writers. InitiaLit is a three-year program, covering the first three years of school (Reception to Year 2). Students have decodable readers that are designed for children in this program so they cover single letter-sound correspondence and digraphs sh, ch, th, wh, ee, oo and ay to begin with, they expand as our students reading does.
Year 3 to 6 students work with MultiLit’s Spell-It as a whole-class program. Spell-It is a flexible program that assists teachers to plan and implement spelling instruction based on assessment of students’ current knowledge. Spell-It teaches the rules, conventions, structure and logic of the English language, to enable teachers to plan effective spelling lessons based on the needs of their students.
MiniLit is an intervention program that is run for Reception to Year 2 students who may need more support to develop their decoding skills. We have Education Support officers who are trained to deliver this program with small groups of students in short sessions that are regularly assessed to track their improvement.
MacqLit is an explicit and systematic reading intervention program that runs through our Year 3 to 6 classes for students who may have difficulties around word recognition. Again sessions are taken by ESO’s who work small groups but we find less students in MacqLit as we work with more in MiniLit but it is always an option for students.
