Reception to Year 1

Early Years Learners

Our Reception and Year 1 Learning spaces are a place for children, parents, carers and teachers to connect. We value the importance of the relationship between home and school, and provide a welcoming environment for all.

We strive for children to be engaged in our learning space. We want our learners to be curious, be inspired and be brave enough to take risks with their learning.

We aim to develop the learning competencies of:

  • Identity;
  • Collaboration;
  • Thinking and Questioning;
  • Managing Self;
  • Connecting and Reflecting;
  • The Language of Learning.

Developing strong Literacy and Numeracy skills are a central focus for our students across the school but a strong base is essential.  Through Investigative groups, we provide opportunities for children to develop and refine their reading, writing, and spelling skills, as well as exploring numeracy concepts, scientific skills, STEM activities and the creative arts.

We provide a vibrant, engaging and creative learning space where children can develop at their own pace and in their own learning style.

Circle Time

Reception to Year 6 students

During Circle Time students divide up into the House Teams, with Reception to Year 6 students spread evenly across the groups, groups are led by our Student Voice leaders.  There are topics and activities that students participate in, circle time gives them time and tools to engage and listen to each other.

Circle time encourages unity, respect, turn-taking and working together towards a shared vision or learning that it’s ok to be different to someone else.

Five key skills that students practice during Circle time are: thinking, listening, looking, speaking, and concentrating.

Benefits of regular Circle time, generally run between recess and lunch are:

  • Improved speaking and listening skills;
  • Increased self-esteem;
  • A sense of community;
  • An understanding of how their behaviour affects others;
  • Improved emotional intelligence;
  • Improved problem-solving skills;
  • A sense of responsibility;
  • Improved relationships between children, and between children and their teachers.
